The new erectile dysfunction drug, which is expected to be launched this summer, is being sold in a much smaller amount than Viagra, the maker of the drug said.
Pfizer, a U. S. biotech company that makes generic drugs, said it has received an initial positive response from its own drugmaker to the U. Food and Drug Administration's decision to lower the price of the generic drug.
"The company has no intention of selling the drug to consumers, and therefore is not selling it to the government for public health reasons," said David Graham, a Pfizer spokesman.
Pfizer, which makes the erectile dysfunction drug, said its product is not yet ready for release.
The drug, which is approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men, will cost $10 to $30 a month, Graham said.
Viagra and Cialis, the other generic drugs the maker of the drug, has also been heavily advertised for sale.
Viagra and Cialis have been linked to a link to heart attacks and strokes in some users, and the drug's maker, Pfizer, is expected to announce an agreement this summer.
"Pfizer is a leader in the treatment of erectile dysfunction and has an opportunity to expand its product portfolio, particularly to patients who may have low or high blood pressure and may not respond adequately to other therapies," said Dr. Irwin Goldstein, a physician and health services analyst based in New York City.
The U. Food and Drug Administration has approved Viagra and Cialis as treatment for erectile dysfunction, the companies said.
The company has also received final approval from the FDA to sell generic versions of the drugs in its marketplace, and the drug maker has been working on other steps to get it to the U. market, Graham said.
Under the terms of the deal, Pfizer is selling the drug in three generic versions: one for $20 to $30 per month, one for $15 to $30, and a third for $15 to $30.
Viagra and Cialis are not approved for use in women, Graham said.
"Viagra will be available in three different strengths and the price will not change, as will the cost to buy the drug from an independent pharmacy," he said.
The two drugs are not expected to become widely available in the U. for as long as several months, Graham said.
Pfizer also is in talks with Johnson & Johnson, which makes its own generic versions of Viagra and Cialis, the companies said.
The companies have been in talks about developing a drug that is more bio-similar to Viagra, Graham said, but have not received approval from the FDA to do so, and the two companies are now at odds over which drugs can be sold.
The drugs are currently under patent, and the company is scheduled to begin selling the products in the U. in the first half of next year.
